Risk Factors

Several factors can increase risk, including age, family history, hormonal changes, lifestyle factors, and underlying medical conditions. Understanding your personal risk profile helps guide prevention and screening decisions.

Common Myths and Facts

Myth: Pain during menstruation is always normal. Fact: Severe or worsening pain can indicate underlying conditions like endometriosis and should be evaluated.

Myth: You cannot get pregnant while breastfeeding. Fact: Breastfeeding is not a reliable form of contraception. Discuss birth control options with your doctor.

Practical Tips

Track your symptoms and cycles using a journal or app. Maintain a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep. Attend regular check-ups and screenings as recommended for your age and risk factors.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening tool that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you are in a healthy weight range. It is not a diagnostic tool, but it is useful for identifying people who may benefit from further assessment.

Adult BMI Categories (WHO)

BMIWeight Status
Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Normal weight
25.0 – 29.9Overweight

How to Calculate BMI

The formula is simple:

  • Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
  • Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) ÷ height² (in²)

Limitations of BMI

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. A very muscular athlete may have a BMI in the overweight range despite having low body fat. Similarly, BMI may underestimate body fat in older adults who have lost muscle mass.

Other factors BMI does not account for:

  • Ethnicity and body composition differences
  • Fat distribution (belly fat is higher risk than hip fat)
  • Bone density

When to See a Doctor

If your BMI is outside the normal range, or if you have concerns about weight-related health conditions (such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea), consult a healthcare provider for a comprehensive assessment.
