BMI Calculator: What Is a Healthy Range for Adults?
Understanding body mass index and what it can (and cannot) tell you.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening tool that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you are in a healthy weight range. It is not a diagnostic tool, but it is useful for identifying people who may benefit from further assessment.

Adult BMI Categories (WHO)
| BMI | Weight Status |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obese |
How to Calculate BMI
The formula is simple:
- Metric: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)
- Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) ÷ height² (in²)

Limitations of BMI
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. A very muscular athlete may have a BMI in the overweight range despite having low body fat. Similarly, BMI may underestimate body fat in older adults who have lost muscle mass.
Other factors BMI does not account for:
- Ethnicity and body composition differences
- Fat distribution (belly fat is higher risk than hip fat)
- Bone density
When to See a Doctor
If your BMI is outside the normal range, or if you have concerns about weight-related health conditions (such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea), consult a healthcare provider for a comprehensive assessment.
