GAD-7 Anxiety Test: What Your Score Means
A quick guide to interpreting the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale.
The Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7) is one of the most widely used screening tools for anxiety. It takes about 2 minutes to complete and helps identify people who may benefit from further evaluation or treatment.

How the GAD-7 Works
The questionnaire asks how often you have been bothered by 7 common anxiety symptoms over the last 2 weeks. Each item is scored from 0 (not at all) to 3 (nearly every day), giving a total score between 0 and 21.
Score Interpretation
| Score | Anxiety Severity | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|
| 0–4 | Minimal anxiety | Self-monitoring and lifestyle measures |
| 5–9 | Mild anxiety | Watchful waiting; consider counseling |
| 10–14 | Moderate anxiety | Recommend professional evaluation |
| 15–21 | Severe anxiety | Active treatment likely warranted |
Functional Impairment
The GAD-7 also includes an optional question about how difficult anxiety has made daily activities. If the answer is "very difficult" or "extremely difficult," professional help is strongly recommended regardless of the total score.
When to Seek Help
If your score is 10 or higher, or if anxiety is interfering with work, relationships, or sleep, speak to a healthcare provider. Anxiety is highly treatable with therapy, lifestyle changes, and—in some cases—medication.
