Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC)

A validated 8-item questionnaire to assess 10-year risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Score ranges from 0-26 with higher scores indicating greater risk.

Warnings:
  • FINDRISC was developed and validated primarily in Finnish/European populations
  • Performance may vary in different ethnic groups; cutoffs may need adjustment
  • Optimal cutoff for predicting T2DM varies by population (typically 9-15)
  • A score >=15 typically triggers invitation to diabetes prevention programs
  • This is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test
Note: Modified versions of FINDRISC exist that omit physical activity and/or dietary questions (modified max score 17-23). The original version with all 8 items has maximum score of 26. Waist circumference thresholds differ by sex.
