Glasgow-Blatchford Bleeding Score (GBS)

Risk stratification for patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding to predict need for intervention (transfusion, endoscopy).

BUN levels in mg/dL

g/dL

Hemoglobin (sex-specific scoring applies)

Required for hemoglobin scoring thresholds

Systolic blood pressure

Heart rate >= 100 beats per minute

Black tarry stools

Loss of consciousness

History of liver disease

History of heart failure

Clinical Notes & Warnings

  • GBS <=1: Consider outpatient management per ACG guidelines.
  • Does NOT predict mortality directly (use Rockall score for mortality).
  • Does not require endoscopy to complete.

Validated for risk of blood transfusion and hemostatic intervention. Best cutoff for low-risk outpatient management is GBS <=1.
