Clinical Notes & Warnings

  • BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat.
  • BSA formulas may overestimate in obesity.
  • Use adjusted body weight for drug dosing in obesity (>20-30% over IBW).
  • Use ideal body weight for nutritional calculations in obesity.

Multiple BSA and IBW formulas available. Devine is most commonly used for drug dosing. Mosteller is simpler and widely used.
