Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC)
Calculates the absolute number of neutrophils (segs + bands) per microliter of blood. Essential for diagnosing neutropenia and assessing infection risk in cancer patients.
Warnings:
- ANC thresholds for chemotherapy vary by protocol and institution
- ANC <500 is considered severe neutropenia with very high infection risk
- Febrile neutropenia (fever + ANC <500) is a medical emergency
- Some labs report absolute differential counts directly; in that case ANC = absolute segs + absolute bands
- I/T ratio (immature:total neutrophil ratio) can help predict sepsis in neonates
- ANC changes dynamically; daily monitoring may be needed during chemotherapy
Note: For SI units: ANC (x10^9/L) = WBC (x10^9/L) x (Segs % + Bands %) / 100. Normal adult ANC: 1500-8000 cells/uL (1.5-8.0 x10^9/L).
Total WBC count. If reported as x10^9/L, multiply by 1000
Percentage of mature segmented neutrophils from differential
Percentage of immature band neutrophils. Enter 0 if not reported separately.
