Tanner Pubertal Staging Criteria
Clinical reference for Tanner pubertal staging (breast/genital development and pubic hair) for boys and girls with associated height velocity guidance.
Sex for staging criteria
Tanner breast development stage
Tanner genital development stage
Tanner pubic hair stage
⚠️ Warnings & Contraindications
- Breast and genital staging are more reliable than pubic hair for assessing gonadal maturation
- Pubic hair may be due to adrenarche (adrenal axis) independent of gonadarche
- Testicular volume measured with Prader orchidometer is most objective measure for boys
- Normal onset: girls 8-13 years, boys 9-14 years
- TSA (Tanner Stage Age) adjusted height curves may be more accurate than CA-adjusted
ℹ️ Clinical Notes
Staging is subjective with inter-observer variability. Breast staging by palpation (not just inspection) is important. AAP recommends plotting height on TSA-adjusted curves for pubertal children.
