⚠️ Warnings & Contraindications
- Higher incidence of GI side effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain) than azithromycin/clarithromycin
- Risk of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) in infants <6 weeks
- Hepatotoxicity (cholestatic hepatitis) reported
- Multiple drug interactions via CYP3A4 inhibition
- May prolong QT interval
- Erythromycin estolate associated with higher hepatotoxicity risk
ℹ️ Clinical Notes
Suspension: 200mg/5mL, 400mg/5mL (ethylsuccinate). Tablets: 250 mg, 500 mg. Base, ethylsuccinate, and stearate formulations have different bioavailability. Given 4 times daily, adherence may be poor.
