Clinical indication
⚠️ Warnings & Contraindications
- Penicillin V is acid-stable and has better oral bioavailability than penicillin G
- Must complete full 10-day course for strep pharyngitis to prevent rheumatic fever
- Diarrhea is common side effect
- Cross-allergy with cephalosporins approximately 5-10%
- For patients with true penicillin allergy, use macrolides or clindamycin
- Take on empty stomach for best absorption (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals)
ℹ️ Clinical Notes
Suspension: 125mg/5mL, 250mg/5mL. Tablets: 250 mg, 500 mg. More acid-stable than penicillin G, making it better for oral administration. Twice-daily dosing may improve adherence but TID is traditional for strep.
