⚠️ Warnings & Contraindications

  • Short-term: increased appetite, mood changes, hyperactivity, insomnia, hyperglycemia
  • Long-term (>2 weeks): growth suppression, adrenal suppression, weight gain, osteoporosis, cataracts
  • Do NOT stop abruptly after prolonged use - taper to prevent adrenal crisis
  • Live vaccines contraindicated during and for 3-6 months after high-dose therapy
  • May mask signs of infection
  • For croup, single dose of dexamethasone (0.6 mg/kg) is often preferred over prednisolone

ℹ️ Clinical Notes

Prednisolone preferred over prednisone in children (prednisone must be converted to active prednisolone in liver). Oral solution: 5 mg/mL, 15 mg/5 mL. Tablets: 1 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 50 mg. Orapred ODT: 10 mg, 15 mg, 30 mg.
